The year of your birth does not just indicate your age! According to the Chinese system of Astrology, the year of birth indicates a certain phase or aspect of a sixty-year cycle of time. Three systems are used for counting and classifying the years: The ten Heavenly Stems, the twelve Earthly Branches and the twelve Animals.

The exact origins of the twelve animal system remain unknown. However, legend has it that, once upon a time, the Jade King was bored, having nothing to do in Heaven. He did not see what was happening on Earth, as he had servants attending to his every wish. He decided that he wanted to see the animals that inhabited the earth, so he sent word to his advisors to bring him twelve animals (which he considered a good sampling). The advisor first sent an invitation to the Rat, telling him to also bring the cat. The Rat’s jealousy prevented the cat from actually receiving the invitation.

Further invitations were sent to the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Ram, the Monkey, the Rooster and the Dog. Their presence was requested at the palace the following day. When they lined up in front of the king, he found that they numbered only eleven, instead of twelve as he had requested. The king sent his servant down to Earth to retrieve a twelfth animal. The servant ran into a man carrying the Pig, and he hastily grabbed it and delivered it to the king. The animals stood in front of the king in no particular order. The Rat, being smaller than the rest, hopped on the Ox’s back and proceeded to play the flute. The king was very impressed by this display. He gave the Rat first place. Second place was given to the Ox for its good sportsmanship, and third was given to the Tiger, who appeared so courageous. The Rabbit was given fourth place, the Dragon fifth, the Snake sixth, the Horse seventh, the Ram eighth, the Monkey ninth, the Rooster tenth and the Dog eleventh. By default, and due to the king’s just nature, twelfth place went to the Pig. After the ceremony concluded, the cat (who missed the invitation) begged the king to reconsider, but was told it was too late.

Funny thing: The Dragon and Rabbit are as different from one another as night and day, yet you’re looking at your second year in a row with a 65 percent favorability rating. Count your blessings, Snake. There is a difference, though: Last year was probably more to your taste, but this one is more likely to result in greater success! Hopefully you charged your batteries and made some good plans while the Rabbit was in charge, because now you have ten good months in which to accomplish big things. Strike out in new directions. Mars is currently travelling through the logical and analytical sign of Virgo for quite an extended time November 18 to July 4 to be exact. Mars in Virgo is highly disciplined, it also gives you the ability to separate your emotions and aim hard towards your goals. It is a time of hard work to achieve what you desire and also gives you the ability to get a great deal done.

To help you with the Mars energy over the next few months keep an eye on the following dates and adjust your actions/thoughts to use this energy wisely whilst remembering Mars is the planet of war, it rushes in without fear… however, during the next few months a retreat in action may give you your best outcome.

How, you might ask, could this be so? Another side to Mars is anger and how we deal with it, whether in ourselves or others. As Mars in Virgo is the master of logic and analysing the next move the period that Mars turns retrograde from January 23 to April 13 may be a good time to sit back and give thought to how you deal with anger in yourself, in others and in your relationships.

Mars is not comfortable in Virgo to begin with. The two archetypes are vastly at odds with one another and are therefore hard to synthesize. This is true if it happens to be the sign your natal Mars is placed in. But it’s also true – and just as challenging – when Mars is transiting (moving through) the sign of Virgo as it is just now.

Where Mars is instinctual, impulsive and assertive, Virgo is more nitpicky, detail-oriented and perfectionistic. As you can imagine, trying to filter one of the energies through the other can lead to frustration and tension.

People who were born with this placement tend to be workaholics (or go-aholics), exceptionally critical and very hard on themselves. Likewise, when these two archetypes join together in the sky (as they are right now) this energy applies to all of us. You may start to feel like there are suddenly never enough hours in the day, like it’s all work and no play and like the work at hand is never done.

Add to that the upcoming retrograde cycle and you have a whole new set of concerns. During this time, you may feel like you’re taking two steps forward and one step back – especially in the workplace. Or you may see setbacks in some of the progress you’ve been making in matters of self-improvement. You may start to feel listless, unmotivated and lethargic.

The message in all this – and the appropriate antidote – is to surrender some of your most out-dated belief systems to the lessons of this Mars in Virgo retrograde. If you’ve been running yourself ragged (and getting nowhere) it’s time to stop and trust that things will get taken care of without your incessant input. If you’ve been too critical and too demanding and too hard on yourself and your loved ones, it’s time to appreciate the beauty in the unfinished and imperfect.

Your Mars placement can tell you a lot about you and your partner’s anger style (which is also learnt from our earliest experiences and family of origin). It can also give you valuable information into how and why your partner reacts the way s/he does.

Imagine how useful it would be to know why your man doesn’t react to when you blow up at him (Mars in Aries) and he just withdraws (Mars in Cancer). You are all set for forging ahead to the “battleground” (Aries) whilst he has gone “undergound” (Cancer) with each time you forge ahead to fight.. he withdraws more. You may think you are winning but are you? Are you really? Or do you just have an opponent who rather than fighting you out in the open (Mars in Sagittarius) has gone from sight and may come to “sting” (Mars in Scorpio) you further down the line. You may have Mars in Taurus and be slow to anger but once aroused are like a bull in a china shop – you find yourself dealing with a partner with his Mars in Libra who wants to know all sides of the argument being discussed – ever tried reasoning all sides with a bull in a china shop? Something may get broken and that something may be your relationship.

Which brings me back to Mars currently in Virgo – cool, analytical, clear and collected. Aiming for a goal and working to get there. You may just find yourself angry with Mr/Ms Virgoan Logic and if you don’t want to take control of your own anger issues then its one way to find yourself hitting your head off a brick wall.

Fortunately, help is at hand. In the next part of this article different anger styles will be explained and which of these may work best for you during this period. A “General” (you!) needs a plan of action (Mars energy) and if you know how to use this energy to your advantage you can accomplish wonders.

Mercury retrograde

There’s a kind of hush…. well I wouldn’t bet on it!

Mercury is retrograde in Sagittarius from November 24 to December 14 which means anything but peace and quiet and if you were thinking you can just ride this period out then think again. Sagittarius is all about the bigger picture, grand plan, larger than life experiences and with Mercury retrograde in this sign you can be sure that if anything does go wrong it may do so in a big way!

If you are the quiet, patient type you may be a bit surprised to find yourself just blurting something out of the blue which leaves others aghast and yourself wondering where those words came from. All your good intentions within a situation may be thrown out the window as communication takes on a life of its own and the vast majority of it will be untamed, blunt and brash…. even your jokes (if you use them to try to rectify the situation) may miss the punch line and with Sagittarius being the “joker” of the zodiac that is saying something.

My advice would be that if you really had to say something keep it very clear in your mind what you wish to say first so you don’t risk upsetting the other person through a tactless blunder and before you know it have a situation of gigantic proportions on your hands.

During the same period as Mercury is retrograde there are 2 eclipses and as Mercury turns direct on December 14 at 3 degrees of Sagittarius it will revisit where the first eclipse of November 24 took place. This makes the next few weeks especially tricky for communication and it may seem that some things are out of your hands.

ARIES

The new year sees you start with all good intentions… and a lot of these intentions are to do with your work. However, as the month progresses and Venus travels her path through your area of friendship and then spirituality you may find you are pulled back into your love life whether you like it or not. There is a pivotal point this month around January 22 when Mercury and Mars form a great aspect to really have your seen and heard at your workplace. Any plans you are thinking of to change your career direction are best left to this time. Do not wait till after January 24 when Mars turns retrograde and may scupper any ideas you have to move forward. Jupiter is in your area of security and stability for the next few months and this is a time when you can lay down plans to see you through times of upheaval with finances.

TAURUS

As 2012 opens with Jupiter currently in your sign I want to remind you to make the most of this lucky time as Jupiter only visits each sign about once every 12 years… you have until mid June to enjoy this luck. For the most part January will be about you wanting to break free and being tied to obligations in turn. Mars is in your area of romance and creativity where it may be forcing you to be a bit more outgoing than is usual for you. Around January 24 Mars turns retrograde so you may wish to not stick your head out too much in relation to romance and play it safe (in accordance with your Taurean character). From January 15 Venus will be showering you with the attention of your friends and you may find yourself making new friendships also this month with the possibility that they turn into something more especially after January 28 when Mercury also joins Venus in this area of your life.

GEMINI

Mercury, planet of communication, is in your relationship area until January 9 with the possibility of bringing to the fore any issues you want to discuss with your partner. As Mars is forming a tense aspect to your Sun sign this month you may wish to think before you speak… a concept that may be foreign to you, but you can but try, as it may give you the best possible outcome to any conflicts you are having just now. On the plus side Venus will be in an area of your chart which will give you an overall feeling of happiness and a happy go lucky attitude until January 15 when the mood then turns to your career. Make sure that towards the end of the month you have others on board with any changes you wish to make that affects your home life and work as there may be friction there.

CANCER

This year may look like year of promise for you from the start as you may have spent the last week (since the new moon in your relationship area on December 24) giving serious thoughts to what is important to you in that regard. With Mars in your area of communication for a prolonged period just now and turning retrograde on January 24 you may wish to get your house in order and your thoughts very clear on what you do want along with a plan to communicate to those close to you the best way for you to achieve this. Venus is moving through areas of your chart that give you a sense of needing to have a commitment to a sense of needing more freedom and the pivotal change in this mood comes around January 15. Luckily for you Mercury is also in your relationship area (along with the Sun) for a good part of this month so you can use this to your advantage and speak up for what you want.

Relationships are of great importance to you as 2012 starts of with Venus, planet of love, in this area of your chart until January 15. You are also coming to the end of a prolonged period where Neptune may have possibly been causing you to have not much luck with a choice of partner and after this month all of that will change as it moves out of your relationship area. This may give you the feeling that the mist is lifting from your thoughts on love and starting to show you some truths in this area for you. Let it lift gently though as you don’t want too much on your hands to deal with at once. With Mars in your area of stability and security and also turning retrograde on January 24 you need to plan carefully and look at all options so you don’t get caught out without a back up plan. Mercury moves into you relationship area after January 28 once again giving you a great communications skills to get your point across. Just remember… a back up plan may be needed.

How’s your energy levels lately? Feeling like you have to do all things at once and no one can help you? You may like to ponder on this because after January 24 your efforts to forge ahead and do everything yourself may reach a point where you need some help. Mars has been in your sign now for the past few months and will be there till July 3. You have lessons to learn and energy and patience to think about. Venus will be entering your relationship area this month after January 15 and by the end of the month forming a tense aspect to Mars giving you a hint where you may find your frustrations being place. Forewarned is forearmed and if you needed any extra warning with this then the moon will enter your relationship area just a few days beforehand (January 26, 27, 28). Remember to balance your emotions at this time as all may not be as it seems.

LIBRA

Home and family seem to be largely on your mind this month followed closely by some great times with children and doing anything you find creative. Venus is in a strong position till January 15 for you to enjoy some romantic times and also towards the end of the month when Mercury may give you the push you need to express how you are feeling about someone. Mars may have been clouding your thinking for the past few months whether by giving you too much to think about or by not making something clear. On January 24 Mars turns retrograde so don’t rush into assuming you know something that you may actually know little about, do not act on any knowledge that is not fully clear and do not become upset over something you have little control over. Yes… kind of like what I just wrote… which would have a similar feel to how you may be feeling. In other words sit back and wait for things to become clear!

SCORPIO

You may have several defining moments this month mainly bought about by different ways of thinking and possibly seeing situations. Mars is still around your friendship area but as it goes retrograde on January 24 there may be gaps that open in a friendship that has your questioning what it was based on. Be prepared for a confrontation that may not be too open or easily seen. Whilst Venus merrily moves through your home and family area till January 15 which has the effect of you basking in your home life it is the change that comes after this date that you may be needing to prepared yourself for. Romance! Try to be prepared for someone special entering your life and give them a chance. They may be a bit dreamy but they are going to be more in sync with you than you realise. With the Sun and Mercury weaving throughout your communication area this month try thinking before you speak… there’s a lot to be said for biding your time.

It may be the start of a new year but if I were you I would have my eyes placed firming on the end of the month when your Sun sign is placed in the middle of opposition between Venus and Mars, the two planets of love and passion. This is especially true for those of you born in the last two weeks of Sagittarius. You may feel torn in two directions and you also need to keep an eye out for any misunderstandings especially around your home life and work. Your energy levels for work may take a bit of a downturn so plan for this and get anything that needs doing done early in the month. Mercury will be working in your favour up until January 9 when it is in your own sign and again towards the end of the month when it is in a great place for communication also giving you an intellectual boost. Until January 15 Venus will be in your area of communication which I’m sure will have you all geared up for some great flirting.

CAPRICORN

Life becomes a lot clearer for you after January 9 when Mercury enters you sign. Around the same time there will be a full moon in your relationship area giving you a chance to see fully any changes that need to be made there. It will also be a time when you feel the need to give to yourself so start planning something you can do just for you at this time. Venus moves into your area of communication after January 15 further pushing you to voice your thoughts to a special someone. With a majority of this month showing up with you thinking on your own security and how you can feel this more it may be a good idea to have a plan made up before you begin any conversations on this. Pivotal dates for this are around January 21 when the moon is in Capricorn and the sun is just moving into Aquarius.

AQUARIUS

January is looking like a very nice month for you! Your love life is being given a boost by Venus in your sign till January 15 and to top this off Mercury is also in your area of friendships (something which is very important to you) up until January 9. This means that the first 2 weeks of the new year will see your relationships in the spotlight. The good news doesn’t stop there because there is also a new moon in your sign on January 23 giving you the chance to start again and also to refresh your New Year’s resolutions. If there is any spoiler this month it will come after January 24 when Mars turns retrograde which may cause you some frustrations and I urge you to read any important documents before signing them. Mercury will also enter your sign on January 28 so your mind should be in top form.

PISCES

Venus will enter your sign on January 15 with promises of romance and daydreams to see you through. With Mars over in your relationship area and opposing Venus though you need to be careful to control your patience. If you think of the saying “all good things come to those who wait” and then apply it to your love life you will get the gist of how this month may be looking for you. Be especially careful around January 26, 27 and 28 when the moon is also in your sign and you may find yourself pulled in different directions without clear input from those you need it from. At this time also Mercury moves into your area of spirituality and you may find that if you “listen” to yourself more than others then you come through this month better than you thought you would and quite possibly with a new found respect for your patience.

March 21 – April 20

You start the month out at a bit of a disadvantage – with your personal ruler (Mars), your career ruler (Saturn) and your work ruler (Mercury) all retrograde. But things straighten out for you soon enough, with Mercury turning direct shortly thereafter and ultimately moving into your sign. Mars follows suit on the 14th and will be in mutual reception with Mercury at that time. What that means for you – aside from getting your mojo back – is that things will start moving forward for you in all of these areas. Your finances should also start to improve – with Jupiter and Venus both in your money sector and the New Moon taking place there later in the month. This should be a relatively prosperous time for you, starting around the 16th and culminating on the 22nd. Focus your energies on that time frame and you’ll find that you can do no wrong.

While you may feel like you’re on top of the world this month, your relationships are going to need some fine-tuning. But you won’t get off so easily where romance is concerned. Pluto (your relationship ruler) turns retrograde on the 10th and Mars (in your romance sector) is itself retrograde until the 13th. If you’re in a new relationship you can bet the honeymoon phase will be over, and if you’re in an established relationship you’ll be rehashing old arguments. New people coming in are probably not “new” at all – but rather those you have long standing karmic issues with. Remember the three C’s – communication, cooperation and compromise – if you want to mitigate more serious problems. You’ll want to make sure you’ve got reliable (and safe) transportation during this time. Wait until the 26th, when the moon moves into your sign, to make any serious decisions or changes to your lifestyle.

Your ruler (Mercury) will also be retrograde until the 4th. This can be particularly challenging, as the combination of these retrogrades can wreak havoc on your carefully orchestrated world. Luckily, this all gets sorted out by the 14th, when Mars turns direct. You start the month feeling a bit out of sorts, in spite of a favorable aspect between the Sun and your ruler (Jupiter). This is not the time to make waves in the workplace, even if you’re not in agreement with the way things are being handled. You could be called upon to do something you’re not comfortable with – such as making a presentation you’re not prepared for or taking a stand you don’t agree with. Venus and Mercury come to the rescue on the 3rd and 4th, paving the way for you to open the lines of communications. Even if things are still a shaky in the workplace, you can count on loved ones to have your back and to validate your efforts.

This month you’ll want to be on the lookout for those who try to challenge your belief systems. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing, although it’s likely to put you on the defense. Or you may find yourself at what seems like an impenetrable impasse with someone whose beliefs are diametrically opposed to your own. An opposition between your ruler and the Sun on the 15th will bring things to a head. But if you’re willing to be open-minded and put yourself in someone else’s shoes you may gain valuable insight into how the other half lives.

You start the month feeling a bit “off,” thanks to an inconjunct aspect between your ruler (Uranus) and Mars. This configuration tends to manifest as more a nagging frustration than anything measurable – sort of like a gnawing sense of discontent that’s hard to put your finger on. Fortunately for you, it lasts only a few days and should be replaced by sense of renewal and restoration by the 9th. Wait until after the 13th, when the Moon moves into your sign, to make any significant career-related moves. Better yet, hold off until the 22nd, when Mercury and Uranus conjunct, as this aspect will help to solidify your goals. Brilliance, insight and ingenuity are the common denominators for these two planets, so use these qualities to your advantage. Where you may have felt like a fish out of water earlier in the month, you can make some very persuasive arguments during this time.

This may have the effect of what may have been a romantic couple of days suddenly turning into a communication mix up especially early on the May 17 when Uranus will also be in close contact to the moon. To add insult to injury – which is what I’m trying to warn you about so you can avoid it – there is an new moon eclipse on May 20 also in your area of communication. Best keep any thoughts you have in relation to your love life to yourself this month as you may be skating on shallow ice if you think you can fix things for now.

Mercury enters your sign on May 10 with the promise of better communication and also clearer thinking on your part. There is a new moon in your area of love and relationships on May 5 and whilst this may have you thinking you have finally come to a few conclusions in that area with new insights you may be experiencing you may wish to wait till the end of the month to put any of these hypothesises into action. With a new moon eclipse on May 20 in your area of stability and security you do not wish to go rocking any boats just yet. A better plan of action would be to do what you need to do for yourself and wait till the coast is clear to follow through with any other plans.

This month as the Sun enters your sign on 20 May you may feel a little bit out of your depth as emotions linked to an eclipse on the new moon in your sign start bringing up a whole lot of questions… without answers. To add to this Venus, who has been blissfully travelling through your sign all month with promises of a great love life actually does a slow down and goes retrograde on 16 May. This may leave you with a few headaches along with those lack of answers and the urge to push forward to find the answers. Beware not to rock too many boats just now though as you may not be able to handle what you unearth. Mercury will quickly travel through your sign from 25 May to 7 June. I know this is the ruler of your sign, I know this should be of help but even the speed at which Mercury is travelling should give you some clue as to why you need to put a “stop” on your mouth getting you into more trouble.

The moon in your own sign on May 24 and 25 is a perfect time to put this to practice as Mercury also moves into Gemini at this time and only highlights your need for balance. Luckily for you you were born with strong instincts as you may need them this month and you may also find you learn a thing or two about yourself along the way.

This month may find you focussed more on your friends and what those friends and friendships mean to you. Some you may love, others you may not feel so close to and others you may wish to finish ties with. The eclipse on May 20 may have the effect of highlighting all these things to you at once and you may be just itching to act on what you come up with. Bear in mind though that with Venus retrograde in your friendship area at the same time you may not be seeing the full picture or you may not be being shown the full picture. When the moon moves into your own sign on May 26 though none of this may matter as Mercury also moves into your friendship area at the same time and nothing may be able to hold you back from what you wish to communicate to others at that time.

You’ve had a bit of a hard time of it recently with Mars travelling ever so slowly through your sign and then turning retrograde to give you another dose of its energy along the way. With Mars now back in a direct motion you may be excused for thinking you are out of the woods… however, on May 21 with the new moon eclipse just a few hours old you may find things come back to haunt you as this moon will form a tense aspect to Mars and may have you lashing out in spite of your own resolve to stay calm. If there is anything annoying you at work try to ignore it on this date as you may find a lot of your frustration around the last few months focussed on a situation that has nothing to do with what really is bothering you.

Not for you the problems that other signs may be having thing month with the new moon eclipse, Venus and Mercury in Gemini! You are looking at a smooth sailing month where you may actually make a few decisions, look at booking some holiday plans or even just have a make over. All past times I’m sure you will relish in. This month may feel like a freeing up of your energy, a shift in the right direction. Even with Saturn still retrograde and in your sign for what may seem like forever with Mars direct and hopefully having cleared up any feelings of tiredness you have been experiencing you are all set to make plans. That sounds like a month to celebrate to me… or a month to just get on with things you need to do.

The eclipse on May 20 falls in your area of love and relationships and I use the word “falls” for another reason also… you may find you have a fall in your relationships if you don’t forearm yourself carefully and that means paying note of what you are thinking so it doesn’t inadvertently come out of your mouth (I know you like to hear things bluntly). You have Venus going retrograde on May 16 in your relationship area along with Mercury entering into this area of your life on May 25. This is all having the effect of making this month a quite exciting time for your romantically but with Mars forming a tense aspect to all these planets and your own Sun you are being forewarned to play it safe.

Use the period from May 10 to May 25 to strengthen communications that need attention. For the remainder of the month you may wish to use your home as a safe place and sanction and if you have family around you all the better. This is a “learning” month for you in situations that come up so take what you learn and do the best you can with it.
